Clopay Torsion Spring Replacement: The Van Nuys Owner’s Guide

Clopay torsion spring replacement in Van Nuys typically runs $180 to $340 installed, and we stock Clopay-compatible springs on our trucks for same-day replacement in most cases. A torsion spring is the coiled steel shaft mounted above your garage door that counterbalances the door’s weight, so the opener only has to lift a fraction of it. Most Van Nuys homeowners discover theirs has failed when the door suddenly won’t lift, or when a loud bang from the garage sounds like someone dropped a toolbox from a ladder.

The spring that broke was rated for a fixed number of open-and-close cycles, usually 10,000 on standard Clopay springs. When it snaps, the door becomes dead weight. The opener motor keeps trying against it, the cables can go slack, and if you keep pressing the wall button, you’ll burn out the opener’s gears. Name the part, quote the range, then do the work. That’s how Marcus Deller and our crew approach every Clopay spring replacement in Van Nuys.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay. We do service every major brand, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie, but this page is specifically for homeowners with a Clopay door and a failed torsion spring.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

If your Clopay door has a metal tube running horizontally above the door opening, with two coiled springs wound around it, this is a torsion spring system. That covers the vast majority of Clopay residential doors sold in the last 25 years, including the Classic, Gallery, Coachman, Bridgeport, and Reserve collection lines. The spring itself is not model-specific the way a logic board is. What matters is the spring’s wire diameter, inside diameter, length, and wind direction (left or right). Those four measurements determine the torque the spring delivers to lift your specific door weight.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that saves Van Nuys homeowners from a bad parts match: Clopay’s standard residential doors use springs with a 2-inch inside diameter, but their heavier wood and premium steel lines often step up to 2 5/8-inch inside diameter springs, and some custom Reserve doors use 3 3/4-inch. A spring with the wrong inside diameter will bind on the shaft or fail within months. We measure the old spring’s wire diameter with a caliper and confirm the inside diameter against the door’s actual weight before quoting anything.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Clopay does not manufacture its own springs. They source them from the same spring manufacturers that supply the aftermarket, so a quality aftermarket spring from a reputable maker is functionally identical to what the factory installed. What matters far more than the sticker on the box is that the spring is cycle-rated correctly for your door weight and daily use. We’ll tell you exactly what we’re installing and why it’s rated for your door.

Signs Your Clopay Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Clopay Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing
  • The door won’t lift more than a few inches. When a spring breaks, the opener is suddenly trying to dead-lift a 150 to 250 pound door. The motor strains, the belt or chain slips, and the door barely moves. This is the most common first sign in Van Nuys, where daily use in the valley heat shortens spring life.
  • A loud bang from the garage, like something heavy hit the floor. That’s the spring snapping under tension. If you’re home when it happens, you’ll know. If you weren’t home, you’ll come back to a door that won’t move and a visible gap in the spring coil above the door.
  • The door feels heavy when you pull the emergency release. Disconnect the opener and try to lift the door manually. With working springs, you should be able to lift it with one hand. If it feels like lifting a sheet of plywood, the spring has lost tension or broken outright.
  • You can see a visible gap in the spring coil. Look up at the torsion tube. A broken spring shows a clean two-inch gap in the coil, usually near the center bearing plate or at one end cone. The two broken halves just sit there, unwound.
  • One side of the door sags or the cables look slack. With one spring broken and the other still wound, the remaining spring pulls unevenly. The door cocks sideways in the tracks, and the lift cable on the broken side goes loose. Continuing to operate the door in this state chews up the cables and can pull the door out of its track.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A Clopay torsion spring replacement in Van Nuys costs between $180 and $340 installed, depending primarily on spring size and whether you have a single-spring or two-spring system. Single-spring doors cluster at the lower end. Two-spring systems cost more in parts but each spring carries half the load, which is why they tend to last longer. If your door has one spring that broke, we’ll show you the option of converting to a two-spring setup and quote both ways.

Every quote is flat and written before any work starts, in line with Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. You’ll see the spring cost and the labor separated as line items, not bundled into one vague number. The price we quote is the price you pay, and it is agreed before a single bolt is touched. Included in that price: the spring itself, all labor, lubrication of the torsion tube and bearing plates, a full balance check of the door, and a written record of what was found and what was installed. Clause 4 is why we photograph the failed spring before quoting the replacement. You see the break. You see the quote. Then we do the work.

All spring replacements carry our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the spring or the installation isn’t right within a year, we make it right. Not a handshake. It’s on the terms page.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things before calling: look at the spring to confirm it’s broken, note whether you have one spring or two, and pull the emergency release to feel how heavy the door is. That information helps us quote accurately when you call. What you should not do is attempt to replace the spring yourself. A torsion spring holds enough stored energy to break bone or worse if it unwinds uncontrolled. The winding bars, the unwinding procedure, the number of turns, the set screws, the cable tension on both sides. Get any one of those wrong and the spring becomes a projectile. Marcus Deller learned the trade through the CUNY Kingsborough mechanical technology program and has done accurate spring load calculations for over two decades, and he still treats every wound spring with the same respect he did on day one. This is not the job to learn from a video.

If you’re in Van Nuys and the spring is broken, call us at (213) 418-2520. We’ll ask what you saw, quote the range on the phone, and get a technician to you the same day in most cases.
